Father Martin’s Musings Use the best opportunities Only recently I heard of a story where a young barrister notified his associate that he would be three hours late for work the next day. The reason was that he was attending a Father’s Day prayer service at his daughter’s school. When he arrived at work the senior barrister gently reprimanded him as the firm had now lost three hours of business income. The young barrister now proved that he was also very smart in the field of life! He calmly said to his senior colleague these very words; “Five years ago do you clearly remember who you represented in court, and do you think that they would remember who you were?” The senior colleague thought for a moment and slowly said; “No I probably would not remember that at all.” The young barrister then said; “I’m sure in five years’ time my daughter will remember me attending her school and so will I remember the experience.” The senior barrister instantly admired the logic and wisdom of his young colleague and probably wished at the same age he would have done the same thing! Jesus of Nazareth spoke about worldly wealth in these words; “I tell you use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends and make sure when it fails you, you will be welcomed into heaven.” (Luke Chapter 16, Verse 9) Fr Martin Maunsell is a Catholic Hospital chaplain in Sydney Sometimes the best lessons in life are learnt when someone shines a metaphorical mirror on another person’s behaviour. Our delivery plan As a Council, we are working to deliver services to support our community and provide safe and inclusive places for our residents. Each year, our Council allocates funds for our Capital Works Program to deliver projects in our community. At our June meeting, Council endorsed the Operational Plan for 2023- 2024, following public exhibition and feedback, which features a Capital Works Program valued at more than $15 million. With our key goal in mind - to deliver in areas the community has asked us to prioritise – we included in our program road and footpath works across the LGA, implementation of traffic management and traffic calming devices, works and maintenance on local parks, sports fields and open spaces as well as community buildings and other council facilities. Other projects will provide connected and accessible infrastructure, protect and sustain our outdoor spaces, and help our neighbourhoods and village centres thrive. We look forward to delivering on these priorities in the financial year ahead to making sure Hunters Hill is as safe and enjoyable as possible for our community. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Silence from Govt a slap in the face Dear Sir, As the blockade of over 120,000 ethnic Armenian civilians enters its 200th day, the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) has formally written to Australia’s Foreign Minister, urging the government to take a firm stance against the dictatorship of Azerbaijan, condemning the block- ade and calling for it to be lifted immediately. With 200 days of isolation and a lack of critical supplies just around the corner, the Armenian-Australian community continues to be disappointed by the government’s lacklustre response. It’s frankly disheartening that this humanitarian crisis has gone largely unrecognised for nearly 200 days by our foreign ministry. We want to make it clear that this is an issue the local Armenian community of Australia cares deeply about. The silence from our government feels like a slap in the face to our community, but we are hopeful our leaders will come to their sens- es and take the right stance, which is to stand up for human rights and condemn this blockade. MICHAEL KOLOKOSSIAN Executive Director, Armenian National Committee of Australia Thankyou to you wonderful people Dear Sir, I am a rather large elderly disabled lady and I use two elbow crutches to walk. On Thursday (6th July) afternoon, I visited Gladesville Village Shopping Centre. When the lift from the car park was not working I made the foolish deci- sion to use the escalator. It was difficult and I was was grateful for some kind assistance. After having coffee with a delightful group of locals and shopping I at- tempted to use the same method to descend to the car park. I was immediately in trouble and feared tum- bling down with the trol- ley. People rushed to my aid and their concern and practical help averted injury. So thankful to strangers and shop staff. One couple walked me outside the centre and retrieved their car to take me and the groceries to mine. Kindness and time from so many. Of course I should have left when I knew the lift was not working and parked around the front, however, it is not level in the outdoor car park so I dis- counted that idea. Please allow me to thank all the wonderful people involved. Ryde group hopes to host a refugee family in August Called “Safe Harbour Ryde” the new group hopes to host its first refugee family next month and has urged readers of The Weekly Times to help. ‘We’ll be supporting a family practically, emotionally and financially over the course of the year but right now we’re trying to raise around $20,000,’ Safe Harbour Ryde Group Coordinator, Jennifer McCoy said. ‘But most importantly, we’re urgently looking for a home for a family of five and are very keen to hear from anyone who can provide either free or cheap short- or longterm accommodation for this family in the Ryde area.” Jennifer said the ideal accommodation would be a three to five bedroom house whose owner is either in a nursing home or recently deceased or who is just a kind, wealthy investor with an idle asset. “It could even be a house that is going to be demolished once a A group has been formed in Ryde to resettle refugees in the local area. ☐ Founding members of Safe Harbour Ryde Emma Paxton, Teresa Russell, Iain Hempstead, Jennifer McCoy and Eric McCoy. Labor Clr Katie O’Reilly said Clr Pedersen’s comments weren’t patronising a cultural community. “This is an opportunity for the whole community to get involved,’’ she said. The Diwali Lights Competition aims to encourage participation from households to foster a sense of camaraderie and community spirit. “By incorporating energy-efficient solar lights into the Diwali decorations, we aim to reduce energy consumption and promote sustainable practices within our community,’’ the Council motion states. A panel of judges is to be determined by staff and will include councillors, a staff nominated representative and community representatives and will judge the lights based on creativity, visual appeal, effective use of solar lights and adherence to the Diwali theme. Labor Clr Bernard Purcell told The Weekly Times he would never give priority to the purchase of a sports field if it meant funding for community health and safety projects took second place. “As supportive of open space and TG Millner as we are, I cannot in all good conscience write a blank cheque that could see ratepayers paying eighty million dollars or more to purchase the land plus a further ten million dollars or more to convert it for recreational use,’’ he said. “And as a Central Ward councillor I’m not convinced that spending this much on a fringe West Ward project is the best outcome for the City of Ryde.’’ Independent Clr Roy Maggio abstained from Tuesday night’s vote and said he has consistently opposed compulsory acquisitions by councils. During Tuesday night’s Council meeting, Liberal Clr Trenton Brown accused the Labor councillors of backing down on their previous commitment to save TG Millner Field. He said Labor only made the commitment during the last term of the council to appease the two councillors from The Greens and with The Greens gone, Labor’s commitment has gone with them. “Labor has abandoned its commitment to the environment and I’m appalled by the Labor Party position because every Labor councillor and greenie had supported the acquisition of TG Millner and tonight they describe it as some sort of vanity project,” he said. Labor Clr Penny Pedersen rejected Clr Brown’s accusation but reiterated Clr Purcell’s concern. “I find it offensive you (Liberals) say we want to build things on this land but there is a point where we can’t afford it, where the community can’t afford it,” she said. But Liberal Clr Justin Li defended the ‘’any or all steps necessary’’ motion for T G Millner Field and challenged Labor to declare its position. “If you don’t believe that T G Millner is worth saving then just come out and say it,’’ he told the Labor councillors. “If you don’t support overdevelopment then vote with us.” Parent assaulted in road rage incident at Eastwood school Police said the alleged assault took place around 1.35pm on Sunday, July 2 as the man and his child stopped outside the school and upset the driver of a white Toyota Corolla be- hind him. “The driver confronted the victim and stood right in his face at which point the victim in fear of being as- saulted pushed this male to distance himself from him,’’ police allege. “Moments later, the male pushed the victim several times causing him to fall to the ground.” Police said the vic- tim recorded details of his attacker’s vehicle. “Police officers identified this male A parent who was dropping his child off at Eastwood Public School was allegedly assaulted. offender and questioned him about the assault where he made partial admissions to pushing the victim,” police said. The male has since been charged with assault. *** A KNIFE carrying man maliciously damaged a car in Marsfield around 4pm on Sunday, July 2nd, police allege. “A couple noticed damage to their vehicle in the carpark in Marsfield after they lent the vehicle to a friend who had been doing burnouts the previous night,’’ police said. “A short time later, the couple were approached by a separate couple who be- gan a conversation with them in relation to how their vehicle had been damaged as well.” Police allege the male offender blamed the other couple’s friends for the damage. “The victims then attempted to drive towards the exit of the carpark but the male offender stood in front of the victim’s vehicle refusing to move,’’ police allege. “The male offender then used a black torch to strike the front windscreen of the victim’s vehicle twice, causing cracks to appear and struck the driver side window of the victim’s vehicle causing it to shatter completely.” When Police arrived, the male offender said he had a knife. “The male offender then produced a black flick knife measuring 23.5cm in total length and the blade measuring 11cm in length,’’ police said. He has since been charged with malicious damage to property and possess knife. *** A REMORSEFUL 53 year old man was lucky not to be charged over an incident at a licensed premises in Gladesville on Saturday night, July 1. Police report the man had refused to leave the premises around midnight despite a police directive to do so. “The man was giv- en several opportunities to comply with the direction and as a result he was arrested and taken to Ryde Police Station where on arrival he immediately expressed his apologies,” police said. “Police discontinued the arrest and he was released from custody but has since been issued with an infringement notice for failing to quit a licensed premises.” said. “It gives the community not only a chance to better our gardens but also to keep active, creative, and engaged as these brilliant outdoor spaces can then bring encouragement and joy to everyone.” For more details, go to: www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/ gardencomp

8 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 12 July, 2023 Congratulations to the 1st North Ryde Scouts, Cubs and Joeys on their centenary of developing Ryde youth in camping, abseiling, first aid and bushcraft. From the Ryde Eisteddfod this July, August and September exhibiting Ryde’s best junior and senior dance, vocal, instrumental, speech and drama www.rydeeisteddfod.org.au to 1st North Ryde Scout Group ON YOUR CENTENARY From everyone at Ryde Scout Group For information about Ryde Scout Group Contact [emailprotected] 1ST NORTH RYDE SCOUTS CENTENARY Established July 16, 1923 The 1st North Ryde Scouts celebrate 100 golden years Respected Scout leader Dennis Small recalls a Century of scouting life in North Ryde. In 1908 scouting was becoming established in Australia and the 1st North Ryde Scout Troop was registered on July 16 in 1923. Scoutmaster Samuel Frew led 20 boys aged from 11 to 13 years who met on Friday nights at the School of Arts in Coxs Road North Ryde. A cub pack with four cubs was started meeting in Bill Cox’s barn of a Saturday afternoon. The troop went into a quiet period over the LORD BADEN–POWELL’S book ‘Scouting for Boys’ published in 1908, fired the imagination of boys and unintentionally started a movement which spread to all corners of the earth. By Dennis Small ☐ The earliest photo of the 1st North Ryde Scouts in 1924. ☐ Cubs from the 1st North Ryde troop take part in a team building drill at the Coxs Road Hall in the early 1950s. ☐ Four 1st North Ryde Cubs at Bill Cox’s barn hall. years of the depression but was reactivated in 1941 and in March 1942, Scoutmaster Boyd McMillian ( Skip Mac ) led 12 boys, meeting in the Methodist Church Hall on Monday nights while Cubmaster Albert George Spinner led 14 cubs on Saturday afternoons at the Methodist Church Hall as well as once again at Bill Cox’s barn. As early as the 1920s scout groups were looking to establish their own meeting places and William John Cox a North Ryde local landholder with an interest in scouting kindly donated a block of land, part of which he was subdividing, to the group. The transfer to the Boy Scouts Association of New South Wales was made in July 1945. The 1st North Ryde Scout Group finally had a home at 225 Coxs Road North Ryde. The hall was officially opened on October 18, 1952. With more land around the area being subdivided and houses being build, came more families with children and a new hall was designed and plans resubmitted in 1962. The 1st North Ryde Senior Scout Troop was registered on the 26th September 1963, SSL Bill Jump ( Skip ) with eight senior scouts meeting Friday nights at the scout hall. The group strength at this time was 18 cubs, 27 scouts, 8 senior scouts and five leaders. The new hall was officially opened on February 26 1966 by Frank Downing MLA, State Member for Ryde. Due to the increase in numbers of boys joining scouts, 2nd North Ryde Scout Troop and Cub pack was started all meeting on different nights, senior scouts had taken over the old hall as their meeting place. By the 1980s the 1st North Ryde had two cub packs, Pack A with Norma Notley (Akela) and Pack B with Rita Lambert (Akela). On the 28th of April in 1985 a venturer unit was registered with Rodney Parker and Jodie Brown as assistant leaders with 12 Venturers. In 1988 girls were allowed to join cubs and scouts for the first time although they had been allowed to join Rovers and Venturers in the late 1970s. Today in 2023 the group has six joeys, 16 cubs, 14 scouts, six leaders and two trainee leaders. The 1st North Ryde has participated in a number of activities. There was Bob A Job week, where scouts went out into their local areas to do jobs for residents for a small sum of money to go into troop funds. Scouts were also participating in community festivals, parades, local Anzac Day marches, Clean up Australia days, cooking the sausage sizzle for collectors at one of the collection places for the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal and providing flag bearers for Ryde City Council’s citizenship presentations. The 1st North Ryde Scout Group has had some long term serving members over the years, Boyd McMillian (Skip Mac) 22years ; Bill Jump (Skip) 32 years ; George Wares (Kim) 24 years ; Norma Notley OAM (Akela) 69 years ; Rita Lambert (Akela) 20 years ; Dennis Small 20 years and on the committee side, Shirley Brown for 42 years. In honour of Norma and Shirley’s efforts over 43 years keeping the group together and still open, the hall was named “Notley – Brown Hall“ with a ceremony on the 16th June in 2019. A fine reflection for a dedicated pair of ladies and loyal supporters to the scouting family at North Ryde. In 2018 Norma Notley was awarded the Silver Emu scout award for over 25 years of service. On the Queen’s Birthday in June 2021 Norma was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to youth through Scouts. Norma was still a member of the group when she passed away on the 11th October 2022, 1st North Ryde’s highest decorated Scout. Akela to a good lot of cubs and scouts over her time and a friend to all who had the privilege to know her. 1st North Ryde has had 20 scouts achieve the Queen Scout Award considered to be the pinnacle of scouting. Today 1st North Ryde Scout Group provides the scout program, providing fun youth development activities, building resilient and confident youth members in three sections, Joeys 5 -8 years, Cubs 8 – 11 years, and Scouts 11 – 14 years. The design honours the long and deep First Nations history of the Gadigal, while leaving a legacy for the future. It showcases First Nations design methodologies to create a place that is rich in culture and deeply connected to Country. Harbour Park will be a drawcard for tourists and Sydneysiders alike. The design complements the naturalistic headland of Barangaroo Reserve and the urban environment of Barangaroo South and is set to be a feature along the 14-kilometre continuous harbourside walk from Glebe to Woolloomooloo. An open design competition was held to attract the best designers from Australia and around the world. A jury chaired by former Prime Minister Paul Keating and comprising leading figures from the local and international design community selected the winner out of five finalists. “The NSW Government ran a competitive design competition to ensure a world-class direction for the future of this park,” NSW Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said. “The community had a major influence on many of the park’s features and activities, and we will continue to bring the community on the journey as the design features are finalised and brought to fruition.” The AKIN team is comprised of Yerrabingin, Architectus, Jacob Nash Studio, Studio Chris Fox and Flying Fish Blue, with Arup as engineering consultants. Now the winning design has been selected, the team will consult with the community to refine and finalise the design and begin planning and procurement processes.

Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. Alison, 26, and 18-year-old Andrew were announced as the 11th and 12th monthly winners at a special event hosted by Club Ryde on June 23, attended by the winners’ families, representatives of Club 6, the group of local licensed clubs which By Anthony Stavrinos ☐ Netballer Alison Miller ☐ Cyclist Andrew Phillips supports the RSF; RSF representatives and Ryde councillors Bernard Purcell and Katie O’Reilly. “Andrew only commenced competitive cycling in July 2020, racing for the first time at the prestigious Hunter Junior Tour, however he has made incredible progress since then racing with distinction in U/19 national-level competition,” said Sinclair Taylor, an official of Neo Cycling Club, who nominated Andrew for the award. “In January 2022, Andrew placed second at the National Road Cycling Championships, U/19 Criterium. “This was a standout performance as Andrew was effectively racing solo against others racing in teams and had had limited opportunity to race in the 18 months since his first competitive race due to the Covid pandemic.” In June and July 2022, Andrew was selected by AusCycling NSW to race in Europe with Dutch development team TWC Maaslandster Zuid-Limburg. “Andrew spent five weeks racing in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany,” Mr Taylor said. “This partnership with TWC Maaslandster Zuid-Limburg aims to create pathway to elite level cycling on an international stage.” Alison was nominated for her award by Eastwood Ryde Netball Association (ERNA) president Karen Waud OAM. “Allison is a mother and has played at a Premier League level for the ERNA Hawks over the past seven years,” Ms Waud said. “She is an outstanding player with a very calm attitude.” Last July, Alison was chosen - along with ERNA team mates Brooke Paterson, Jessica Conlan and Sophie Fawns - to represent the NSW Swifts at netball’s Australian National Championships. Both Alison and Andrew will be presented, along with ten other monthly Sports Star winners, to guests at this year’s Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Gala Presentation Dinner on Friday, August 4 at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club. The only teenager to have qualified from Oceania, he said he is putting aside his studies to concentrate on his sport. “I try my best at school, but CrossFit is at the forefront of my mind right now,’’ he said. “Fortunately, my teachers know my situation and respect my training regime, so they give me a little slack and I’ll definitely make up for the time when I get back.” CrossFit was founded in 2000 and is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. In 2023, 322,000 people from 150 countries competed in the CrossFit Open, which is the first stage for qualifying for the CrossFit Games. Brandyn started CrossFit three years ago, training with his sister who was doing CrossFit workouts at home during Sydney’s first lockdown. He currently trains in Gladesville twice a day, six days a week, before and after school and said CrossFit with helping him through some tough times as he built physical as well as mental fitness. The Games will run for three days from August the first to August the third and Brandyn will only find out the workouts a few weeks in advance. With crowds of up to 10,000 per day, he’s looking forward to competing at such a huge international event. Brandyn says he is hoping for a strength event so he can show the world how much weight he can lift on a barbell but admits the running workout will be a challenge. “I would love it if there wasn’t a running workout, but there probably will be, so I’m training hard at that right now,” he said. As for his HSC, he is trying to balance his training with study. Global internet sensations Mighty Car Mods have thrown their support behind Brandyn and spokesperson Blair Joscelyne said he really admires Brandyn’s work ethic. “There’s plenty of people ready to say that kids of today don’t know how to work hard, but Brandyn absolutely proves that wrong,’’ Blair Joscelyne said. “He has worked so hard for this opportunity and I know he’s going to make the most of it.” Brandyn said his visit to the USA will give him an opportunity to hit all the available American fast-food joints but he’ll still rely on Milo for energy. “If I don’t have time to eat my Milo Cereal, it goes in my protein shakes, and I’ll always have a Milo after dinner,” he said. APIA win as Spirit FC draw Macquarie Park’s North West Sydney Spirit FC also continued its unbeaten run with a nil all draw against Sydney Olympic at Christie Park on the same day. Midfielder Jack APIA Leichhardt consolidated its position on top of the Premier League table with a two goals to one win against the Western Sydney Wanderers at Lambert Park on Saturday. ☐ Action from the APIA v Western Sydney Wanderers match (image: Football NSW) Armson opened the scoring for APIA in the fourth minute after defender Josh Symons launched a counter attack and played a beautiful, clipped pass over the defence and in behind the Wanderers’ defence for Armson to hit the top right-corner of the goal with a powerful left-foot shot from close range. In the 25th minute, the Wanderers equalised with a goal to Marcus Younis before top scorer Jack Stewart secured the three points with a goal in the 77th minute when the Wanderers keeper parried his shot into the back of his own net. APIA coach Franco Parisi paid credit to the Wanderers’ tenacity. “Credit to the Wanderers, they’re a good young side that play good football, they pushed us to the very end and they should probably be sitting higher in the table,” he said. North West Sydney Spirit FC and Sydney Olympic shared the points on a blustery Saturday evening at Christie Park. In a match of few opportunities both teams failed to capitalise on their chances and settled for a draw. Spirit FC coach David Perkovic said the poor conditions and high winds at Christie Park influenced the final result. “It was a frustrating game played in tough conditions and both sides found it difficult to play against the wind,’’ he said. “No one was able to take control of the game and in a game like that, it comes down to moments and neither side were able to take theirs tonight.” Sydney Olympic enjoyed more field position and created the most goal scoring chances, especially in the opening half hour. The rookie five eighth said it is ‘’awesome’’ to join the Tigers from the Tiddlies and play his first game as a replacement for the injured Daine Laurie, while New Zealand born Aitasi emerged from the reserves team after he arrived in Australia several years ago at age 15. Aitasi said he’d been separated from his mum - who lives in the land of the long white cloud - for three years due to the COVID lockdown and to see her among the Tiger fans on Thursday night is a memory he’ll cherish for the rest of his life. After Tommy’s try the Tiger fans were on their feet again in the 40th minute when prop forward Alex Seyfarth delivered a well-disguised short ball for second rower Shawn Blore to burst through the line with the Gummies defense flapping at his heels. Our Pommie captain John Bateman obviously relished the cold night air and led the way in defence, making 49 tackles. Now’s the perfect time for supercoach Tim Sheen to trial new players as he holds back a Tiger team perfectly poised to make a charge into the top eight and on to grand final glory, just like he did in 2005. It all starts this Friday night at 8pm against the Frights at McDonald Jones Stadium. Tommy Talau (23) scored his first try for the Tigers this season and five-eighth Will Smith (31) and Aitasi James (22) made their NRL debut against the Gummies at CommBank Stadium on Thursday night. BY THE ONE EYED TIGER ☐ Shawn Blore dives over for a try. ☐ Will Smith makes a break. ☐ Aitasi James bursts through the Gummies line.
